Infrared Saunas Can Help Alleviate Symptoms of These Illnesses

Posted by

Everybody knows that saunas have a positive effect on one’s health. Weight loss and detoxification are among the most well-known benefits. While these are certainly great for many of us, what about those who suffer with conditions such as chronic pain? Fortunately, the infrared sauna has been clinically proven to be effective in managing the symptoms of several illnesses.

Mayo Clinic describes fibromyalgia as a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain and fatigue, as well as localized tenderness. Symptoms can emerge after a physically or emotionally traumatic event, or even accumulate over time without any clear cause. A variety of methods are used to manage the symptoms, including heat therapy in an infrared sauna.

Soothe Your Pain and Mitigate Illness with Regular Infrared Sauna Use

Research completed by Kagoshima University Hospital in Japan revealed that patients who underwent a 140°F therapy session for 15-minutes two to five times a week reported a 78% decrease in pain. They concluded that this effect becomes stable after 10 treatments.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the tissues around joints, resulting in pain and stiffness in the affected area. It is a chronic, systemic disease that may also damage other important areas of the body, such as the lungs, heart, blood vessels, and even the eyes. In a 4-week study, RA patients were treated with sauna sessions twice a week, for 30-minutes intervals at 131°F. Subjects reported a significant temporary reduction in pain and stiffness. The study concluded that an increase in treatment frequency and length will reduce RA symptoms more significantly.

Sleeping Problems

Insomnia might sound trivial to some people, but it can bring about serious health consequences, both physically and mentally. Sleep deprivation can increase your risk of developing high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disorders. It can also cause irritability, anxiety, and depression. A sauna session of at least 30 minutes prior to going to bed may help you sleep. Aside from flushing out toxins, the cooling down process after heat therapy will release a natural substance called melatonin, which helps to take you into a deep sleep.

Allergic Rhinitis

If you sneeze non-stop when exposed to pollen or dust, you may have allergic rhinitis. It is often mistaken as the flu. With allergic rhinitis, the inside of the nose becomes inflamed because your immune system overreacts to allergens in the air.

A clinical study was completed to observe the therapeutic effect of the infrared sauna on allergic rhinitis. Patients were placed within 30 cm of a far-infrared heat source for 40 minutes daily for 7 days. During this period, the patients’ symptoms were observed, and there was found to be a significant improvement in eye itching, nose itching and stuffiness, as well as sneezing. Based upon these findings, Infrared saunas look to be a promising form of treatment for people with allergic rhinitis.

Skin Problems

Acne and blemishes are definitely a concern for many people. Not only are they painful, but they can make your complexion seem dull and unhealthy. It’s normal to get one or two acne spots every two to three months, but when it happens every month or every week, it’s time to be concerned. There are three main causes of chronic acne: bacterial infections, compromised liver detoxification, and excessive hormones called androgens. These hormones increase oil production that will clog the pores and cause acne. Poor hygiene and diet will only worsen this condition.

An infrared sauna can support the detoxification process. It is seven times more effective than the traditional sauna, and it releases 20% toxins compared to the traditional sauna’s 3%.

Heat therapy, especially infrared heat therapy, has many benefits. Research and studies are still being conducted to discover even more of the benefits it has to offer.
