Researchers in Finland tracked the health of 2, 300 men who took part in the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease (KIHD) study. They compared the medical records of those who used the sauna once a week against those who used it more than four times a week. The latter group posted stunning results:

  • 65% lower Alzheimer’s Disease risk
  • 66% lower Dementia risk

The participants spent around 15 minutes average sauna time.

  • In addition to lowering the risk for Alzheimer’s and dementia, regular sauna use has also been found to stimulate the release of brain chemicals that promote well-being.
  • Recent studies have discovered a link between spending time in a sauna and increased levels of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. These are brain chemicals that help you manage your mood, attention, sleep, focus, and appetite.
  • Heat stress is also associated with the production of prolactin — responsible for myelin growth that helps repair nerve cell damage and enhances brain functions.
  • A potential link has also been observed between brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and healthy heat stress, such as the type induced in an infrared sauna. BDNF enhances neural health and the creation of new neurons.
  • Finally, a study done on animals has shown that the level of endorphins in the brain significantly increase after spending time in a sauna.
